A Cozy Read About Starting Over: All Booked Up by Melody Carlson Book Review
There are some books that just feel like a warm blanket the moment you open them. All Booked Up by Melody Carlson was exactly that.
The story follows Riva, a widowed empty nester trying to find her footing in a season of life that feels uncertain and, honestly, a little scary. I haven't personally lost a spouse (thank God), but I have walked through plenty of grief that had me feeling compassion towards Riva. Her story and her stance on things felt so real to me. Moving forward after loss doesn't look the same for everyone, and this book gets that.
One of my favorite parts of the story was the dynamic between Riva and her daughter, Kenzie. Kenzie looks at her mom's massive book collection and SHE sees something holding her back, she even calls it a "jail" at one point. (Yes, I gasped a little when I read that.) But to Riva, those books are comfort. They're memories. They are her. I loved watching her hold her ground gently and gracefully, while still leaving room for her daughter to understand. It's such an honest look at how grief, love, and control can get all tangled up inside a family.
As the story unfolds, Riva opens her home to renters and what follows is a mix of personalities, a few unexpected moments, and even a little hope for something new. I saw someone compare it to a modern-day Golden Girls and honestly. I completely see it in the most adorable and cozy way. There's something really charming about a group of women, each carrying their own story, finding each other under one roof.
Now, I'll be real with you. I didn't connect with every character as deeply as I hoped I would. But here's what's interesting, I connected with the story itself. The themes of letting go, starting over, and making room for what's next? Those carried the whole book for me.
If you're looking for something heartfelt and cozy, the kind of read that reminds you that even in the middle of change, there's still room for joy and maybe even a second chance at love....... All Booked Up is worth picking up.
My Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
All Booked Up by Melody Carlson is a warm, cozy read that delivers exactly what it promises. The themes of grief, starting over, and making room for something new are what really carry the story. I didn't connect with every character as deeply as I hoped, but the story as a whole? It stuck with me. If you're looking for something heartfelt and comforting, without a lot of heavy lifting, this is a solid pick. Not every book has to blow you away to be worth your time, and this one is absolutely worth it.
